Worship Replaced by Community Service

For the second year in a row, Lutheran Ministry in Christ (LMIC) canceled all its regularly scheduled weekend Worship Services. Instead, the congregation spread out into the community engaging in a variety of serving opportunities that reminded us to be the hands and feet of Jesus where people live, struggle and have needs.

During “Compassion Weekend” (May 3-4, 2008), the congregation engaged in hands-on service projects. On Saturday, volunteers went to Broward Outreach Center to paint the men’s quarters. In a few short hours, they, along with the residents of BOC, completed the 4000 square foot plus project. Another team headed over to SOS Children’s Village to tend the lawns and beautify the grounds. Down at Cooperative Feeding, a team spruced up the place with soap, water, and paint. Our children spent the morning with the residents of Margate Health Center doing crafts and sharing smiles. Later in the afternoon, a group of our Sunday School girls went back to MHC to dance for them. On Sunday, a group which included many of our Middle Schoolers, met here at 7:30 AM to head over to Tomorrow’s Rainbow to help the staff set up for their annual fundraising celebration. Throughout the weekend, the choir brought joy to the residents of three local nursing homes.

Here on the home front, scores of volunteers sorted, bagged, tagged, and delivered goodies to Women in Distress (35 Mother’s Day Gift Bags), DVDs for Cleveland Clinic Cancer Patients, Gear & Goodies for Seafarers’ House (60 full kits + 4 shopping bags full of additional items), Cards and Gifts for Military Units in Afghanistan and Iraq (over 80 kits + many, many extras), sorted & labeled over 2000 books for Lippman Youth Center & Broward Outreach, packed 200 bagged lunches for Broward Outreach Center, countless cards & lollipops for the Coral Springs Crossing Guards & Broward Sheriffs, donated 24 life-saving pints of blood, sewed 115 skirts for the girls of the Servant’s Heart in Guatemala City, hosted a play date with the kids of 4 Children’s S.A.K.E., knitted and/or crocheted 35 washcloth for Women in Distress, 40 Prayer Squares for the Military, and 35 Chemo Caps, and throughout the weekend the Prayer Circle offered petitions to God.

At the end of the weekend, we gathered for a family style meal and a special Sunday evening Worship Service to share our stories and celebrate God’s presence in our world, and give thanks for the privilege of serving others and bringing glory to God.
